40 years ago, on 12 May 1972, Wings (Paul McCartney's group) released "Mary Had a Little Lamb" with on the other side "Little Woman Love".
At the time Paul McCartney gave the impression that he had released this nursery rhyme as a reaction on the BBC banning his song "Give Ireland back to the Irish". Later he said that he wanted to write a good rock number for children.
It did well in the charts in the UK (#9) but the B-side was more successful in the States.
A very nice anecdote: the catalogue number is R 5949...which is exaclty 1,000 numbers higher than Love Me Do (R 4949)
