When Sgt. Peppers was released in 1967, the album started with the magical words "it was 20 year ago today". Well now we are 50 years later and the Beatles are still going strong on the radio, television, and every now and then even in the charts. So welcome to "It was 50 years ago today" where we will publish every day a news item about what happened that day in Beatles History...only 50 years later!

Beatlemania is born
Today 50 years ago, on 7 October 1963, the term "Beatlemania" was first used by Andi Lothian, a Scottish concert promoter who used the phrase when talking to a reporter at the Caird Hall Beatles Concert.
The first time the term was printed in a newspaper, was a couple days later on 15 October 1963 in the Daily Mirror where the previous day's Beatles concert in Cheltenham was discussed.
