The Beatles at the YMCA in Hoylake, Wirral

On 24 February 1962 The Beatles experienced something they hadn't seen in a long time: a crowd that booed them off the stage.

They appeared at the YMCA in Hoylake, Wirral at the request of Charles Tranter, a club organiser who saw them first play at Mona Best's Casbah Coffee Bar.

After midnight The Beatles appeared at the Cavern. Other bands who played that night were the Red River Jazzmen, Ken Dallas & The Silhouettes, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Ken Sims' Vintage Jazz Band and Tony Smith's Jazz Band.
